My best friend's wife is in need of replacing her 01 Forester with something newer. '06+, 9 grand cap (she has cash money and if it is 2wd need to budget $600 or so for snows). Completely not on top of maintenance at all. She ran a wheel bearing out of the subie one time because she didn't hear it over her stereo for obviously fucking months. Knowing this, what is the best thing that wont bang too much for the buck. OPPO GO!
And thanks

I am trying to steer her out of another subie just due to the eventuality of head gaskets and her general lack of maintenance intentions. I was thinking Kia but do those hold up good?

she used to have a 98 V6 and actually loved it. sold it rusty as all get out with 280K on it

Yup. The SEs aren't half bad looking either, in my opinion.

Meh you would trust a kia more?
No pro at all but basically the later cars are fine. I have had a 97l almost 200k on it, 04 wrx, 05 sti, 06 sti, 06 outback xt, 13 brz, never had a HG problem or actually known someone who blew a hg on a subaru. 06 sti heavily modified and tracked, 05 sti midly modified and tracked, 06 outback xt modified with more boost and has a beastly 140k on it of hard hard living. The old 2.5 up to ~ 99 was questionable I'll agree.
Now still retain the 06 xt, 06 sti, 13 brz. The 97 was hit by some jerk off, the 05 sti was wrecked by a friend at triple digits :(
Subaru awd is far superior and better for a blonde driver.

from what I hear about kias is they are great if you have your warranty and dont mind the trips to the dealer for free warranty service. Out of warranty - i'd avoid.
Fusion/Milan or Escape/Mariner would be great, same platform for all1st gen is cheap, solid reliability available in AWD (all 4 of them). Mazda 6 would work as well, also same platform. Also, with standard all-season tires I made it through the worst winter in metro detroit history in the FWD V6 Milan. I know maine is worse, but we got close to 100" of snow and I did fine, even fought my way through about 6-7 inches of unplowed/un touched snow on my street once.

The Asian marks have a reputation for incredible reliability and cheap maintenance. This includes Kias and especially Subarus. However, if you are telling me that she absolutely never does any maintenance on her car, there is no magic vehicle that she can buy which will run forever. Unless she wants an old police Panther, she'd better learn to at least take the car in for checkups, or she will break whatever she buys, no matter what it is.

2.7L 4 cylinder 4Runner. Cheap & plentiful, 2 or 4wd, easy to work on, spacious, and nearly impossible to kill.

Get another Forester! You should be able to find an 06 or 07 for about $9K

Tell her terrible stories about not being able to get home FOR MONTHS each winter.

She needs to look at Kias. They're pretty reliable and not too expensive. If she needs a 4x4 she'll probably have to settle for something as-is but if she'll settle for a 2WD car she might even be able to find something with a little warranty left on it. (5 year, 60k bumper to bumper for second and subsequent owners)

Familiale was the 8 seater too I think

Well, officially it's supposed to seat 7, the Familiale. Awesome.
